Routes

Plan your flight route and easily share it with friends

View and create routes

You can access your routes from the Profile page in Gaggle. By tapping the All Routes link Gaggle you can see all the routes you've created or that was shared with you and you will also find a button to create a new route.

When you create a new route you have give it a name and you can also choose what type of route it should be. Gaggle currently has 2 types of routes that you can create:
  1. Private Route: A private route is a route only you are planning to fly. Private routes do not have the extra features that shared routes have like leaderboards and spectating. Private routes can be converted into Shared Routes.
  2. Shared Route: Shared routes are routes that you plan on sharing with others. Shared routes also have additional functionality like leaderboards and the ability for people to spectate pilots that are busy flying the route.

Once you've given the route a name and you've chosen the type of route you want to create you can then plan the route.

Planning a new route

You can plan your route by adding waypoints to the route. To place a waypoint you can move the map until the Waypoint indicator is centered on the position you want. If you are happy with the position you can tap the "+" button to create a new waypoint at the specified location on the map. Continue to place waypoints at specific positions by moving the map and tapping the "+" button.

Gaggle will always place the waypoint as the next one based on the currently focused waypoint. The Waypoint that is currently focused is shown at the bottom of the screen and Gaggle will draw a dotted line as a visual guide to show how the route will change.

Reversing the route: You can choose to fly a route in reverse once you start flying and reversing a route in the planning stage is not needed.

Tip: If you have Airspaces installed then airspaces will also show up while planning your route.

Change waypoint settings

Once you've placed a waypoint you can change the settings for the waypoint. The following can be set for each waypoint:

Name: You can change the name of a waypoint by tapping on the name and then editing it.
Radius: The radius of the waypoint. Once you change the radius for a waypoint Gaggle remembers the setting and uses the same radius for future waypoints that you create.
Audio Cue: You can set a custom audio cue that will play when you reach the waypoint. This is useful if you want some waypoints to remind you about things along your route like changing to a specific radio frequency or to look at landmark.
Reached On: What behaviour Gaggle should use to determine if the waypoint was reached and if the next waypoint should become the new navigation target. Waypoints can be reached on:
  • Entry: The moment you enter the radius of the waypoint it's considered an entry.
  • Exit: The moment you leave the radius of the waypoint it's considered an exist.
  • Auto: By default auto sets the mode to entry, unless you start the flight inside the radius of a waypoint then it will be exit.

  • The distance from the currently focused waypoint to the next waypoint.
  • The distance from the start of the route to the currently focused waypoint.
  • The total route distance from start to finish.

You can also tap one of the buttons at the bottom to:
  • View a list of all the waypoints in the route to quickly focus on another waypoint.

Opening a route will give the route overview screen. This gives a you quick view of what the route looks like, the amount of waypoints in the route, and the total distance of the route.

From this screen you can do the following:
Edit the route: Tap the route to open the route editor where you can change the waypoints or add new ones.

  • Pilots nearby
  • Your groups
  • Using a link that you can text to others
Fly the Route: Tapping the "Fly Route" button will start a new flight recording with this route loaded in. Before you start the recording you have the option of reversing the route. For more information about the Waypoint Widget while flying have a look at the Instruments page.

Shared routes also has the following functionality:
  1. Leaderboards: All the pilots that reach all the waypoints on the route will be placed onto a leaderboard where with their total flight time for the route and also each leg off the route between waypoints.
  2. Spectator View: Once a pilot starts flying a route then a spectator option becomes visible and friends and family on the ground can view the progress and live location of all pilots that are flying the route at the moment.
  3. Automated Flight Linking: When you and your friends fly the same route your flights will automatically be linked to each other once the flight recordings have been uploaded.
